Why Drop Leaf Kitchen Tables Make Sense
Drop leaf kitchen tables have been used in this country for over 300 years,
since before it was even the United States. With such a rich heritage of use
over the years, there must be some very good reasons why it makes sense to have
drop leaf tables in your kitchen.
There are several different kinds of drop leaf kitchen tables. One is the
gate-leg table. For the gate-leg table, four solid wood lathe-turned legs were
made to hold the table in place. Then, there were two more legs made that would
hide away underneath or swing out to support leaves.
The butterfly table was also a drop leaf table, but it was not commonly used in
the kitchen. It was smaller than gate-leg tables. The leaf supports were
wing-shaped, and that is where it got its name.
In the mid to late 1700s the swing-leg table was popular. It was hinged along
the rails. It was more elegant, yet it was slightly unstable. This was due to
its only having two stationary legs.
The Pembroke table came next. It was similar, but with four fixed legs. It was a
true drop leaf kitchen table, used most often for breakfasting. Now, drop leaf
kitchen tables come in many varieties. They are mostly gate-leg and swing-leg
tables now.
Drop leaf kitchen tables make sense because they can be used with many different
styles of décor. They come in numerous types of wood. The wood can be stained
and varnished or painted. There are chrome and Formica drop leaf kitchen tables.
These tables come in other materials as well.
If you have a small kitchen, drop leaf kitchen tables are ideal for your home.
You can fold away the extra legs and leaves while you are not using the table.
In most cases, you will only have a narrow board’s width of table left to take
up space.
Drop leaf kitchen tables are great for when you bring in the groceries. If you
put them on the counters, you will have room to move about your kitchen without
bumping into the table. On the other hand, if you have so many bags that you
need the table to put them down, all you have to do is open it out.
Then, when you need the table, you can take out the legs and pull up the leaves.
Suddenly you have a table large enough to seat the whole family. You can get
drop leaf tables that fold up to a fairly small size and then open out to seat
as many as eight people. |
